Local Activities

We have detailed many interesting places and things to do, for all the family, to enable you to make the most of your holiday.
Motor Museum at Loheac

A great day out for all.  Here is fantastic collection of automobiles including  models old and new from the world's leading car manufacturers like Ferrari, Lamgorgini, Cadillac etc. There are also motor bikes, toy cars and farm machinery and much more. Don't miss the Formula 1 vehicles and watch videos of some of the famous races.  Why not try out the race circuit for yourself. National and International Rallys take place here in early September. Enjoy a meal or drink on site or alternatively try one of the four restaurants in the village of Loheac.

Redon

Where the Nantes-Brest Canal and the River Vilaine meet and the locks and bridges are smothered in flowers.  Explore the former Abbey of St. Sauveur and the cloisters. The Grand Rue with its many 15th to 18th century houses and shops leads you to the marina. Once a thriving port with tall residences, that once belong to the wealthy shipowners, it is now a pleasure port. Every Monday is Market day which is held in the centre of the town. Try the spit-roast chickens -they are excellent with fresh baguette.

The captial city of Brittany. Visit the parliament buildings in the old quarter and see the beautiful timber framed houses.  Take a relaxing coffee in St. Anne's Place. Experience the new metreo - totally automatic and very economical. The main market day is Saturday and there are also antiques and book sales.

St. Just Megaliths

Visit the Megaliths - the second most important site in France.  The Maison Nature and Megaliths in the church square is a very new modern style of musuem with many hands-on exhibits.
In the peak season take a guided tour around the area or just stroll around the hilltop to see the stones and burial mounds. The walk will take you to the lake known as Etang de Val where rock climbing is one of the activities available.

La Gacilly

Picturesque cottages of the artisans

La Gacilly - town of flowers and artisans

This pretty town is very charming with an array of flowers on the bridge, over the weir and all through the old town. Crafts of the local artisans are displayed in the cottages of the old quarter.  Watch them at work and perhaps purchase a souvenir to take home.  Most recent addition is the annual display of large photos on the walls and fences of the old town - each year has a different theme.  Boats can be hired here to go downstream to the L'Ile aux Pies.  Take a boat trip that includes a lunch at a restaurant near the river Aff.

Penestin Beach

This picturesque beach at the mouth of the Vilaine is only one hour away. The village of Penestin offers a variety of bars/restaurants and souvenir shops.

Le Port de Saint Nazaire

Here is something for all the family, boats, shopping and the beach. See the A380 airbus under construction. Take a tour around the replica of the Normandie, winner of the Blue Ribbon across the Atlantic race. See inside a sub-marine and visit the musuem and the shipyard where the Queen Mary II was built.
Opposite the dock is new shopping complex and just around the corner is a beautiful beach.

Guerande, The salt fields, La Briere National Parc and Marshes and La Baule.

The fortified town of Guerande is famous all over the world for its sea salt. Enter the walled town through the magnificent twin towered gate and admire the magnificent timber framed buildings and narrow cobbled streets. Enjoy a cafe while you sit and 'people watch' , or experience the local dishes with a crepe or 'plat de jour' at one of the many restaurants or creperies. Stroll around the souvenir shops and maybe purchase a special gift to take home.

Drive south through the Parc Naturel Regional de Briere with its diverse species of flowers and wildlife.  Hire a small boat or punt and explore the narrow canals as they weave around the flat marshland. Visit the Saline and see the salt fields and the famous sea salt being dried and harvested.

Drive down to the coast to the glorious beach of La Baule that stretches as far as the eye can see around the bay. Spend the day on the beach or shopping in the designer boutiques.  There are many restaurants here to choose from along the seafront where you can relax and appreciate the views over the bay.
